As many as six 3,000 horsepower diesel-electric locomotives are added to heavy freight trains for the nine mile (14.5 kilometre) climb up particularly steep grade east of Rogers Pass. Taken from the lead locomotive, this photograph shows some of the additional motive power added at Roger Pass Pusher Station to help a 108-car solid grain train up the 2.2 percent grade. This is a rise of 2.2 feet (.7 metres) per 100 feet (30 metres) of track length.
