It was once common for sons to follow fathers - who had often followed their fathers - into the railway, the post office, or the retail business. Working in mail, rail, and retail was almost a way of life for many people, and companies encouraged hiring within families. Although generational employment is not as frequent today, daughters and sons still follow in the footsteps of their parents and other relatives.
