More than 30 years of research and compilation have gone into Omer Lavallee's latest work, "Canadian Pacific Steam Locomotives".

Unlike the format used on most North American locomotive histories, Mr. Lavallee, CP Rail's corporate historian and archivist, has dealt with the various developments and innovations in "periods corresponding to the terms of office of each of the 10 men who held the senior mechanical post in Canadian Pacific between 1881 and 1949".

Thus the contributions made by these individuals, "several of whom had a profound effect upon design and policy", are acknowledged and expanded upon.

Apart from the text, which incorporates several hundred well-chosen photographs, there is a 110-page roster of all Canadian Pacific steam locomotives, showing builder; date built; road numbers; class; wheel arrangement; cylinder and driving wheel sizes, as well as disposal dates.

Numerous additional appendices include rosters of acquired and subsidiary companies; locomotives used on construction; locomotive assignments; locomotive diagrams, and preserved locomotives.

The general index and the photograph index are useful, and former Canadian Pacific Chairman and President, N.R. Crump has written the foreword.

Not merely a publication for rail fans, "Canadian Pacific Steam Locomotives" will be of interest to historians, geographers, locomotive engineers, and anyone who has ever tried to date a photograph of any of the 3,257 steam locomotives which operated over the Canadian Pacific Railway.
