Mobile Service Vehicle Goes
Where the Action Is

Lucy Payette C&PA Montreal

TRACKSIDE SERVICE:  From left - Jean-Marc Preville of HBI Equipment on top of the locomotive - Pat Gagne, CPRS area manager, operations, (pointing) - Bill Peterman, CPRS manager, facilities engineering - and Dave Morin of HBI's mechanical training group put the mobile service vehicle through its paces.

Moving the tools to the locomotive is easier than moving the locomotive to the tools.

That's the conclusion CP Rail System research developers reached recently when they went looking for more efficient ways of servicing equipment for the railway's mechanical department.

A new prototype for a mobile service vehicle (MSV) was demonstrated at CPRS's St. Luc Yard in Montreal on 7 Dec. 1995.

The new tractor-trailer unit is equipped with sanding, oil, water, and vacuum cleaner equipment, enabling mechanical employees to service a locomotive on the spot.

The MSV functions alongside fuelling trucks.

Bill Peterman, facilities engineering manager, said the new unitis "an organized and professional way to work with better servicing equipment. It's a major shift in the way mechanical people look after locomotives".

7 Dec. 1995 was the final day for standard tests in Montreal.

The MSV was scheduled to begin servicing locomotives from Toronto and southern Ontario beginning 9 Dec 1995, Pat Gagne, area manager, operations, said.
