Car 54, Where Are You?
Bob Kennell C&PA Montreal

Montreal - As of 1 Dec 1995, a new 1-800 telephone service, to reach CPRS police is up and running throughout Canada. The new toll free number enables callers to speak directly to a CP Police member 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Calls received after business hours will be directed to the national control centre in Montreal. Information will be relayed to a local railway police officer to investigate.

Along with the 1-800 number, a new graphics package to identify CP police vehicles was unveiled. A stylized train on the side of the vehicles informs the public at a glance that railway police are on the job. "We will be easily recognized as a railway police department", said Gerry Moody, superintendent of investigation for the system. An on-board computer, sophisticated communications equipment, and the latest V-shaped patrol lights complete the patrol car package.

The Crime Prevention Unit vans, used for school and mall demonstrations, will also sport the new design. "We are trying to heighten our profile within the communities, and we think our marked police vehicles and the new 1-800 number will attract public attention", Moody said.
