IRON HORSE GETS FACELIFT - Harsh weather, theft, and vandalism have taken their toll on the former CPR Mikado 2-8-2 locomotive that sits in front of the Heritage Museum in Chapleau, Ontario. Mayor Earle Freeborn and his council, along with the Heritage Museum committee under the chairmanship of Doug Greig, have dedicated themselves to refitting and restoring locomotive 5433 to its former glory, together with improving and enhancing the museum building and the surrounding park. Plans are currently under way to establish a capital funding program to assist with the expense of this historically interesting project. The locomotive has been in the park since 1964.

SCHREIBER PARK PROJECT - From left:  Matt Oliphant FOP's service area manager for Northern Ontario, Michael Gravelle MPP for Thunder Bay-Superior North, Ray Gionet chairman of heritage and tourism for Schreiber, Bob Krause equipment coordinator, and Don McArthur mayor of Schreiber, celebrate a $119,000 government grant to expand the local historical park for which CPR donated land.

CREW OF EMPRESS ARRIVES IN CALGARY - Don Heron, CPR director of passenger services, holds a photo of the crew of the Empress of France from the 1920s, beside a model of the former CPR ship in the Canadian Pacific Railway Pavilion. The photo was discovered by Marella Walsh of County Durham, England, and forwarded "to whom it may concern" in Calgary's Gulf Canada Square. The ship represents an era when CPR had 63 ships afloat and more than 14,000 employees engaged in shipping activities.

GREAT MOMENTS IN CPR HISTORY - In 1886, CPR's first year of transcontinental operations, the company opened an office in Hong Kong to secure traffic from the Orient. Agent David Brown was dispatched to China, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand in search of cargo.
