Emergency Response Exercise Set for June 10 in Kenora

Being better prepared in the event of an emergency will be the focus of a mock disaster exercise on 10 Jun 2004 in Kenora.

For this upcoming drill, Kenora Emergency Measures, Ontario Provincial Police, Kenora Police Service, Kenora Fire Department, Bell's Waste Oil, Ministry of Environment, Northwestern Ontario Environmental Care and Canadian Pacific Railway will practice public emergency response procedures at a simulated derailment. In the scenario, responders will be dealing with a chemical leak into Lake of the Woods. The mock disaster training exercise is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and will take about two hours.

Residents may hear sirens and see smoke and emergency vehicles, as well as media responding to the scene. During the drill, traffic on Government Road maybe affected.

Purposes of the drill include testing emergency responders' ability to work together during an emergency situation, training junior officers, testing the public notification system and testing communications with the general public and members of the media.
