Canadian Pacific Railway Plans Emergency Response Drill Saturday in Sparta, Wisconsin

Sparta Wisconsin - At 8 a.m. Saturday, 18 Sep 2004 Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) will help Sparta and the surrounding area conduct an emergency response drill along its tracks in Sparta.

Canadian Pacific Railway will work with local, Monroe County, state and federal agencies and others to practice public emergency response procedures. Responders will be told a tanker truck and a train collided at a crossing, causing an explosion and derailment. After the mock derailment, a lone gunman fleeing the area begins shooting at people who challenged him.

Residents may hear sirens and see smoke. They also will see emergency vehicles and medical personnel and media at the scene.

The drill will include representatives of CPR, local police, fire, ambulance and hospital personnel, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Federal Railroad Administration, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Onyx Special Services and Wenck & Associates.

Purposes of the drill include testing multiple agencies' ability to communicate in a crisis, training junior officers and testing whether the public notification system operates as intended around the clock.

Media wishing to cover the drill need to report by 7:15 a.m. Saturday for a safety briefing at the field on the corner of Walrath and Milwaukee streets in Sparta.
