Morley Man in Critical After Being Hit by Train

Morley - A 27-year-old Morley man is in critical condition at Foothills Hospital after being struck by a train 21 Sep 2004.

Calvin Labelle was walking on the tracks close to Hwy. 1 and Hwy. 133X on the Morley Reserve when a westbound train approached him from behind and blew the whistle. "I believe they honked, but for whatever reason, he chose not to listen," said RCMP Cpl. Mel Calahasen, adding he didn't believe the man was listening to headphones at the time. "Fortunately for him the train wasn't going very fast. And that's probably what saved his life."

According to Calahasen, the victim's wife was nearby but didn't witness the collision. "She heard him yelling and screaming afterward and that's when she came upon him."

Labelle was transported by ground ambulance with a crushed left leg, fractured ribs and a large laceration on his head.
