Historic CPR 2816 Empress Steam Train to Celebrate Alberta and Saskatchewan Centennials

Canadian Pacific Railway's vintage steam train, the CPR's 2816 Empress, will again be taking people back in time as it helps mark the centennials of both Alberta and Saskatchewan during the summer of 2005. The 1930 Hudson steam locomotive and its support rail cars will be traveling the two provinces over the next several months and making appearances in a number of Alberta and Saskatchewan communities.

"CPR played a key role in building the country and in growing as Alberta and Saskatchewan did. We are proud our railway is as relevant today in continuing to build the economies of both provinces as we were 100 years ago," said CPR Vice President, Paul Clark.

CPR's Corporate Historian, Jonathan Hanna said the railway's history in Alberta and Saskatchewan is goes back a long time. "Canadian Pacific Railway and the two prairie provinces go back to the very foundation of the railway in 1881. The railway brought thousands of settlers out west from Eastern Canada, the United States and overseas. The company also built telegraph lines, stations, branch lines and grain elevators across Alberta and Saskatchewan."

The 2816 Empress' first trip of summer 2005 will be June 18 - 23rd: Train departs Calgary on Saturday, June 18th at approximately 8 a.m.
