Train Levels Stalled Volks

Port Elmsley - A 23-year-old woman's Volkswagen was destroyed Saturday when it was struck by a train after stalling on tracks near near Port Elmsley, between Smiths Falls and Perth.

OPP said the woman was driving northbound on Armstrong Rd. at about 3:50 p.m. when her car stalled on the tracks. As she was trying to push the car off, an eastbound CP freight train, travelling at about 50 km/h, approached the level crossing.

Realizing the train would be unable to stop in time, the woman abandoned her car before the train plowed into it. No one was injured.
