Canada Railway to Talk with Sikh Drivers on Hard Hats Issue

Toronto - Faced with stiff opposition from Sikhs to the new rule requiring drivers to wear hard hats, the Canadian Pacific Railway plans to hold negotiations with Sikh truck drivers to resolve differences on the issue, India's Lok Sabha (Lower House) was informed on Wednesday.

The CPR had issued a memo in August this year stating that it will enforce a rule requiring drivers to wear such hats. This resulted in stoppage of work later that month.

Subsequently, CPR temporarily suspended the enforcement of the memo until a resolution was reached, India's Minister of State for External Affairs Rao Inderjit Singh said in a written reply.

"As the matter is under negotiations between the CPR and the Sikh community, it may be premature for Government of India to make any demarche with the Government of Canada regarding this matter," the minister said.
