Souris Man Cut from Car Wreck

Souris - The jaws of life were used to cut a Souris man from the wreck of a pickup truck after he drove the vehicle into a standing train near Souris yesterday, Mounties said.

Canadian Pacific Railway spokesman Ed Greenberg confirmed the 103-car train was stopped at the time of the crash at around 7:15 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. while its crew switched around cars.

Blue Hills RCMP Sgt. Bob Chabot said the train was long enough to block the crossing about two kilometres west of Souris.

The truck was southbound on the gravel road when it struck the train. The crossing is only marked by signs.

The truck's driver was taken to Souris hospital, then to Brandon Regional Health Centre with non-life-threatening injuries.

There were no damage to the train or track, Greenberg said. No members of the train's crew were injured.

Mounties hadn't determined the precise cause but alcohol has been ruled out as a factor.
