Vandalism at Tug Boat Junction

Agassiz British Columbia - Another recent incident of vandalism that could have easily put people in danger occurred at the Tug Boat Junction. A large metal hook was placed on the railway track at the point where the track is elevated eight feet. The incident happened during the day.

"It could just be a prank to young kids - but it could have been quite serious and people could have lost their lives. The only thing that prevented more serious damage from happening was that the train operates at such a slow speed, about one km an hour," says Merv Kricheldorf, the park manager at Tug Boat Junction.

The hook caused the front wheels of the engine to derail. "If the train had been going faster the engine could have jumped the tracks and because the engine is heavier it would have pulled the other cars off the track," says Merv.

The 16 passenger train was only carrying two passengers and the conductor. No one was hurt and the 50 year old engine was eventually placed back onto the track.

If you have any information on either of these incidences contact the Agassiz RCMP (796-2211) or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
