Washouts Close Canyon

Thompson Canyon British Columbia - On 11 Mar 2007, major landslides last week north of Lytton have closed Hwy 1 between Spences Bridge and Lytton. Ten km north of Lytton at Gladwin 3,000 cubic meters of mud and debris 50 meters in length and four meters deep blocked the highway. In the pictures above, 12 km north of Lytton at Tank Hill a debris flow plugged culverts under both the CPR line and highway, resulting in a washout 30 meters wide by 10 meters deep. Fifteen km north of Lytton at Nicomen, several debris slides came down over a 200 meter length, washing out the CPR line.

The slides cut power and telephone lines to Gladwin and the Nicomen Indian Reserve, and cut off road access to residents.

Access by Lytton residents to the Cache Creek/Ashcroft area is limited to Hwy 12, expanding an hourly one-way trip to two and a quarter hours. The Trans Canada could remain closed until mid-week.
