CP Rail Diverts Trains in BC to Shore Up Tracks Against High Water Levels

Kicking Horse Canyon British Columbia - High water levels in British Columbia forced Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. to shut down a stretch of track on its line in the Rocky Mountains, the railway said Wednesday.

Traffic to the line between Field and Golden, B.C., just west of Alberta's Banff National Park, was diverted through the railway's southern route while additional supports were installed on the tracks, CP Rail said.

"The water level is receeding and we expect to have that line back in service this evening," spokesman Mark Seland said.

The company, Canada's second largest railway, was able to move shipments along its more southerly route without impacting service, he said.

CP Rail is keeping a close eye on two other locations in the soggy province as heavy rains and abundant snow melt threaten to overflow Fraser River banks in central and northern B.C.
