Train Derailment Causes Traffic Delays

Portage la Prairie Manitoba - A train derailment early this morning in Portage la Prairie has resulted in delays for motorists in Portage la Prairie.

Canadian Pacific Railway officials say a train derailed at its crossing on Saskatchewan Avenue West about 5:10 a.m. One set of wheels from one of the rail cars, which was not carrying hazardous material, came off the tracks, causing the train to stop. However, none of the rail cars toppled.

The two westbound lanes of Saskatchewan Avenue were closed, while railway workers addressed the situation. Portage RCMP were directing traffic onto one of the eastbound lanes, which resulted in minor traffic tieups for about five hours.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
