CPR Says Derailment "Not out of Ordinary"

This photograph sent to the Times-Herald by Pat Litzenberger shows grain cars involved in Monday's derailment at the CPR yard in Moose Jaw.

Moose Jaw Saskatchewan - A minor derailment at the Canadian Pacific Railway yard in Moose Jaw Monday created extra work for employees but did not disrupt service to customers, according to company officials.

"We consider it a pretty minor incident," Breanne Feigel, media relations officer for the CPR said Tuesday. "It didn't affect train operations and there were no injuries, no public safety issues, and no environmental issues."

According to Feigel, 10 boxcars loaded with grain were sitting on unused tracks at the west end of the yard when their wheels left the tracks shortly after 10:30 a.m. Feigel did not have an explanation as to why the wheels left the tracks.

CPR is investigating the incident.

All 10 cars remained upright and no grain was spilled.

The cause of the derailment is unknown and currently under investigation by CPR. "Derailments like this happen a handful of times a year," said Feigel. "It's nothing out of the ordinary."

Track maintenance employees spent a day using heavy equipment to lift the boxcars back onto the tracks. Operations at the Moose Jaw yard were back to normal Tuesday afternoon and the grain was expected to be delivered to customers on time.
