CP's New F Units

Canadian Pacific Railway recently refurbished two ex-Ohio Central FP9A units for use on the Royal Canadian Pacific luxury train.

These two units were numbered as the next two numbers above the highest numbered F units in the 1950 CPR fleet.

CP 4106 and CP 4107 were released for service on the RCP on 16 Aug 2007. They powered a fly fishing trip 16-21 Aug 2007 but I caught up with them on their next trip 23-28 Aug 2007 making the Golden Circle tour from Calgary to Golden, Cranbrook, Crowsnest, Lethbridge, then back to Calgary.

Thirty two well-healed passengers traveled in the lap of luxury on this train at prices around $5,000-$6,000 for five days.

These units are beauties in that nearly original CPR livery.

The crew reported they were not running all that well. On the climb from Fort Steele to Cranbrook number 4106 would only load 300 amps and the 4107 was having traction motor problems as well. Later that evening they motored up the hill to Crowsnest without much problem.

Hopefully a trip to Vancouver will happen soon - Ken Storey.
