Train Racket Needs to Go, Resident Says

Cambridge Ontario - There is a racket going on near Cambridge Memorial Hospital and Peter Hughes wants it stopped.

The Martin Avenue resident appeared before the city's general committee Monday to complain about the CPR freight trains behind his house.

Describing the problem as "a long festering wound," Hughes said he has tried talking with railway officials but they wouldn't answer his calls. He has also tried talking with officials from the Ministry of the Environment, but they "stick their heads in the sand" and city officials "want to do a study".

"The noise is unbearable," he said, noting that he can't open the windows in his home. He has replaced the windows of his home three times, yet he still can't shut out the noise and he now has to sleep with earplugs.

Hughes said the noise problems have escalated as production at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada has increased and that the 40 homes in his neighborhood all suffer the same problem.

Coun. Ben Tucci has asked that a meeting be set up to discuss the problem with the railway.

"This is not a jurisdictional issue, it's a quality of life issue," he said.

The meeting would involve Mayor Doug Craig, Tucci, Cambridge MP Gary Goodyear, and rail officials.

Craig noted that it would be critical to have Goodyear at the meeting as the railway officials will only listen to the federal government.
