Train Derailed Near Edmonton

Lamont Alberta - Canadian Pacific Rail is urging drivers to be careful at crossings after a collision north of Lamont derailed a CP grain car.

Around 7 a.m. today, a woman driving an empty crude-oil tanker-truck unit collided with a work locomotive that was hauling 56 grain cars across Highway 831, north of Lamont, Fort Saskatchewan RCMP told Global News Edmonton.

CP spokeswoman Breanne Feigel said it appears the truck failed to stop at the train crossing. The bells and lights were operating at the time, warning motorists that the work locomotive was moving cars through the crossing, she said.

"It's a bit icy at that crossing, so she may have tried to stop too late," Feigel said of the tanker-truck driver.

"Because the train made contact with the tractor-trailer, one of the grain cars did derail. There were no injuries in the incident, no public safety issues, and no environmental issues."

The impact of the crash sheared off the front of the tanker truck. The driver was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital as a precaution.

The grain car, partially off the tracks, forced the closure of Highway 831 for several hours. Officials hoped to have the car back on track early this afternoon, Feigel said.

All drivers need to be careful at crossings, she said.

"People just need to pay attention to what's going on at railway crossings, because it's not worth the risk to try to beat a train."

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP officers are investigating.
