Train-Car Crash Kills Morley Resident

Morley Alberta - Police are investigating a collision between a freight train and a small car that claimed the life of a Morley woman earlier this week.

Cochrane RCMP Sgt. Audrey Robinson said emergency crews were notified of the collision that occurred at an uncontrolled rail crossing north of the Ozada overpass on the Trans-Canada Highway at 8:45 p.m. Monday (14 Jan 2008).

The crossing is marked with warning signs.

Nakoda EMS and Exshaw fire department responded to the scene. The woman was taken by ambulance to a Calgary hospital, where she died.

Robinson said Tuesday the train crew attempted to stop the train when they saw the car sitting in the middle of the crossing, but were unable to stop in time.

The engineers also attempted to alert the driver, but with no success.

Canadian Pacific Railway spokesperson Breanne Feigel said Tuesday the three-man crew on the train followed proper procedure and initiated emergency braking, which takes about 1,000 metres to stop a train, depending on the weight of its load.

"Our crews did what they were supposed to do in terms of going into an emergency and attempt to stop the train, but unfortunately, it did make contact with that car," Feigel said.

"(A collision) is quite traumatic on crews," she said, adding they are receiving counselling.

The road was dry and clear at the time of the collision.

Police are not releasing the name of the deceased woman, pending notification of the extended family.

CPR has not yet completed its operation report, Feigel said.
