Canadian Pacific Railway Local 101 Strike Deadline Looms

As the strike deadline looms between the CAW Local 101 and Canadian Pacific Railway, a number of complex issues have yet to be resolved, including in the area of Skilled Trades reductions across the country. The strike deadline is set for 29 Jan 2008 at 12:01am.

Bob Chernecki, Assistant to the CAW National President Buzz Hargrove, believes the negotiations are progressing, but there are still a number of key issues that remain concerning.

"Our negotiating committee has successfully fought back a number of concessionary demands tabled by the company on work rules issues and various benefits," said Chernecki.

CAW Local 101 President Tom Murphy remains optimistic that the union will bargain a strong settlement for its members.

"We received a strong mandate from our members last week with eighty-five percent voting in favour of a strike, if necessary, and the company is aware of that," said Murphy. "Our goal is to get the best possible settlement for our members and I believe we can do that."

The federal mediator has been working with both parties and will continue to do so until the deadline.

CPR/Local 101 negotiations have been ongoing since October 2007. Local 101 represents 2,500 members in the CP Rail system.
