Train Halted by Grass Fire Near Blackie

Blackie Alberta - The High River Fire Department responded to a grass fire in a field beside the Explosives Ltd. plant in Blackie Tuesday afternoon.

It was a busy day for High River firefighters, who spent nearly two hours trying to extinguish the blaze.

It was not a large grass fire, but it was complicated by the presence of more than 20 railway ties in the area, senior firefighter Mike Pearl said Tuesday night.

Fortunately, there was no permanent damage to the tracks, but the fire department did have to halt a train until they managed to get the fire under control and verify the safety of the route.

The fire department believes that the fire was ignited by sparks from an earlier train.

It is something that you see every so often, especially when the weather is dry like it is now, Pearl said.
