No Injuries in Canadian Rail Yard Derailment
Hamilton Ontario - Three rail cars loaded with steel and a
shunting vehicle used to move them derailed yesterday in a rail yard in southwestern Hamilton.
Six rail cars were being moved by Steelcare Inc. in the Canadian Pacific Railway yard on Aberdeen when brakes failed.
"The operator was doing a normal manoeuvre with six cars with steel products," said Steelcare president Demetrius Tsafaridis.
"While doing the move, the brake lines went on either the Rail King shunt vehicle or on the rail cars themselves."
Steelcare is a steel and metal goods storage and transportation firm in Hamilton.
Three cars and the shunter were automatically derailed by emergency devices to prevent them from leaving the rail yard. There were no
injuries and no damage to other property, Tsafaridis said.
CP Rail investigators will determine why the brakes failed today, he said. Several metres of track will have to be repaired in the rail
yard.
