Holiday Train Amuses Crowds, Fights Hunger In Rochester

Rochester Minnesota USA - For the first time in history, a well-known train makes its way to Southeast Minnesota.

From Canada to Minnesota, the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train made a scheduled stop in Rochester to help a very important cause.

Even through 14 degree temps, thousands cheered as Canadian Pacific's Holiday Train made its way through Rochester.

"I really wasn't too excited about coming down and being in the cold but my husband was right. It really was fun to see," said Myrna Reinartz.

Decorated with festive lights, the train came with a musical line up and plenty of entertainment, but within the festivities here at the Holiday Train stop comes with the important message to donate what you can to fight hunger.

"This is a wonderful way for Channel One to collect food that will directly go into the food shelves here in Olmsted County," said Cynthia Shaffer.

Canadian Pacific's Holiday Train began in 1999 and has raised more than $3.5 million for local food banks.

It also collected more than a million pounds of food.

This year proves to be more crucial as the economy is driving more people to the food shelf, and it looks like having the Holiday Train stop in Rochester is helping out.

"Some little entertainment, but yet people come out and give all kinds of food and money donations. I think it's great," said Paul Erdman.

A check for $2,500 was also presented to Channel One from the Holiday Train.

The stop in Rochester was made possible after Canadian Pacific's acquisition of DM&E was approved in September.
