School Board Briefs:  Money and Museum

Port Moody British Columbia - Port Moody Station Museum has dusted off its collection and revamped programs and exhibits to give School District 43 students a glimpse of the city's past.

Program co-ordinator Rebecca Clark told trustees last week that the museum is welcoming school tours on various subjects related to the curriculum. The programs are multi-media, sensory, and hands on, she said.

They include a program called Riding the Rails, for kindergarten to Grade 2 students, highlighting the museum's former use as a live-in railway station, Building Community in Pioneer Times for Grades 2 to 4, where students explore the early history of the city and compare it to today, Industry and Community for Grades 4 to 6, where students learn about six industries that played a role in the city's development, and Animating History for Grades 4 to 8, where students create an historic scene out of paper and make a video using stop-motion photography.

A program for high school students, called Joining a Nation, is also available, focusing on railway development and confederation.

The museum also welcomes people learning English and has an education program geared to them.

The museum is also holding an educators' appreciation event on 26 Mar 2009 from 3:30 to 6 p.m.

The Port Moody Station Museum is located at 2734 Murray St., next to Rocky Point Park. The phone number is 604-939-1648.
