New Historical Site for Sudbury

Sudbury Ontario - Sudbury has a new historical site. A plaque was unveiled at a lookout point on Howey Drive where two benches have been placed to recognize the coming of the railway to Sudbury and the founding of the town 126 years ago.

The plaque and benches were placed by the Minnow Lake Community Action Network. At the official ceremony John Lindsay, Chair of the Restoration Group, and Dale Wilson of Nickel Belt Rails Publishing, a railway historian, presided at the occasion.

The plaque explains that the railway originally was constructed along Howey Drive in 1883 and moved in 1906 to its present location closer to the lake, named after the chief surveyor for the CPR at that time William Ramsey.

Permission for much of the relocation had to be obtained from the major landholder of the time, Count Nicholas Julian Frederic du Caillaud, a Sudbury pioneer developer, and this is recorded on the map along with many of the streets at that time and their location.
