80-Year-Old Killed at Wetaskiwin Railway Crossing

An 80-year-old woman has been killed at a train crossing in Wetaskiwin.

A northbound freight train destined for Edmonton hit Emilia Dublanko at a road crossing at 50 Avenue about 9 a.m. yesterday morning, said RCMP.

All train-crossing signals were active at the time.

Dublanko was reportedly walking to church at the time she was hit.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, said police.

"It's a tragic incident, but we'd like to take the opportunity to remind people to be alert for trains any time they're around the tracks", said Jeff Johnson, a spokesman for the train operator CP Rail.

It takes about 1.5 km for a train to stop, he said.

Police continue to investigate the mishap.

Dublanko's family has been notified of her death.

Richard liebrecht.
