Train and Truck Collide

A pickup truck was hit by a westbound Canadian Pacific Railway coal train
on Thursday afternoon, at a private crossing south of Worrell Crescent.
The train went into emergency braking but the locomotive engineer was
unable to avoid hitting the vehicle. The pickup driver was not seriously
injured.

Milner British Columbia - Langley RCMP were called on Thursday afternoon to the scene of a collision between a southbound train and older model pickup truck, just south of Worrell Crescent along Glover Road.

The driver of the pickup truck was either entering or exiting a private driveway on the west side of Glover Road when the truck collided with the train. The driver of the truck was conscious and speaking shortly after the collision, said police. He has subsequently been transported to hospital but doesn't appear to have any major injuries.

Initially, Glover Road was closed to traffic. It has been re-opened, however the train will remain stationary for some time as railway personnel complete the necessary safety checks before resuming operation.

Access to Glover Road was blocked at the following locations by police, 72 Avenue at 208 Street, 80 Avenue at 208 Street, 83 Avenue at 208 Street, and 82 Avenue at 216 Street.

Crossings at Worrell, Crush, and Smith Crescents, along with 216 Street, were blocked by the train.

Mike LoVecchio of Canadian Pacific said the truck-train crash was "entirely preventable". "People should stop when they see a train coming. Trains have the right of way for a reason."

LoVecchio pointed out that it is very difficult for trains to stop because of the enormous weight they are transporting. In the case of this loaded coal train, it would have been well in exceess of 10,000 tonnes.

He said the train cannot be moved until it is completely inspected, because the sudden braking could cause damage to the wheels, brakes, or other equipment.

"There is a significant impact (on the railway) from this type of incident," he said.

This is the second incident in just over a week where a train was stopped on the tracks in Milner for an extended period. On 10 Nov 2009, a fire in a locomotive traction motor caused a coal train to be stuck on the tracks for several hours.
