Cambridge Ontario - A 22-year-old Cambridge man was killed early Saturday after being hit by a train in Cambridge.

Waterloo Regional Police Staff Sgt. Alison Bevington said Christopher Morrison McGlynn had been out with a friend at a local establishment prior to his death. He left and was walking in the area of Bond Street, near Samuelson Street, around 1:20 a.m. when he tried to cross a set of railway tracks.

He was hit by a westbound Canadian Pacific Railway freight train and killed instantly. There are four tracks in the intersection, which are marked by gates and lights, however it's unclear if McGlynn was hit at the intersection or somewhere else along the tracks.

Mike Lovecchio, spokesperson for Canadian Pacific Railway, said crew members saw a man lying in the tracks around 1:20 a.m. and quickly activated the train's whistle, lights, and bells in an attempt to alert him.

"The circumstances of how he got there are still under investigation," Lovecchio said.

The crew on the train, which was headed to Toronto, have been given time off and will be offered counseling, Lovecchio said.

"Obviously our thoughts are with his family and friends but also with our crew," Lovecchio said.

"Incidents such as this are preventable. There is no need to trespass on the railway."

Tests will be done to determine if alcohol was a factor in his death, Bevington said.

Police are looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have spoken to McGlynn before his death. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 519-650-8500, ext. 2235.
