Thieves Interrupt CP Rail Schedule

Sparwood British Columbia - Thieves in Sparwood managed to hold up CP Rail operations throughout the East Kootenay on 19 May 2011.

RCMP are seeking a suspect who broke into a locomotive in the Sparwood rail yard late on 19 May 2011 and stole an electronic brake valve.

Valued at $3,500, the valve has no use other than in a train locomotive.

Without the valve, the train was forced into emergency braking status and couldn't be moved. That, in turn, interrupted ultimately the entire operations of CP Rail in the Elk Valley.

Mines in the area are heavily reliant on the railway for moving coal.

Elk Valley RCMP estimate the total in damage and the cost of disrupted train operations exceeds $10,000.

Anyone with information about the theft should call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or CP Rail at 1-800-716-9132.
