City Helps CP Rail with Track Repair

Leduc Alberta - A fault in the railway tracks was the cause for the closure of 65 Avenue on 3 Nov 2011, with City of Leduc workers helping with the re-paving of a section near the railroad tracks.

The emergency road closure was done after a CP Rail tech car went over the tracks and noted the railway lines had started to spread, according to CP officials. In order to comply with Transport Canada regulations, CP trains were forced to reduce their speed from 65 miles an hour to 40 at the railway intersection because of the transportation of dangerous goods and for the safety of the general public, so railway officials decided to do repairs on the defected portion of the track.

"We ripped out all the pavement and we're fixing our defect with the rail and at the same time we will repave it because it was a rough crossing," said Darrell Suprovich, a CP official.

The track was removed and was replaced at the popular intersection near Sparrow Drive, along with the re-paving of the destroyed asphalt.

As part of the city's agreement with the railway company, Leduc workers helped with the re-paving of the ripped up asphalt surrounding the track. The cost of the re-paving was still unknown at the time of press, but city officials emphasized that the cost was inevitable.

"The railway has been here longer than the city has and we have an agreement with the railway. A certain portion of our asphalt had to be removed in order for the track to be replaced and repaired, so it is the City of Leduc's responsibility because the city does own the road," said Rick Sereda, director of public services with the city.
