Museum Hosts Centennial
Train Trip to Mission

Port Moody British Columbia - The railroad, like in so many communities across Canada, played an integral part in developing Port Moody into what it is today.

But as the country modernized, opportunities for most people to ride a train started to dwindle.

Thanks to a donation and a celebration, though, residents will have a chance to ride the rails to raise funds for the Port Moody Station Museum.

On 18 Aug 2013, it will be all aboard for a train excursion from Port Moody to Mission on a Canadian Pacific Railway 1950s diesel train to celebrate the city's centennial.

Jim Millar, manager of the Port Moody Station Museum, noted CP doesn't normally run the cars, but has leant them out for the day for this occasion.

"Riding a train is an interesting experience. There aren't that many opportunities anymore," he told the Tri-Cities Now.

"Riding on a train is something that's kind of hard to do these days."

It's also rare to ride a train that will provide entertainment as you board and disembark, as is planned for the event.

Train conductors will also be on hand to provide information on the trip to guests.

"It should be fun," Millar said, adding it will be different than riding the commuter West Coast Express.

There will be two trips leaving from Port Moody and going to Mission, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

A bus will complete the other half of the trip, and the entire excursion is expected last about three hours.

Tickets are $30 per person, with the money going back to the museum as a fundraiser.

Kids and families are welcome, but given the vintage of the train, there are accessibility issues, and people are being asked to call the museum to arrange accommodations.

Tickets are available at the museum, at 2734 Murray Street, and can be paid for by cash or cheque only.
