Bonnybrook Bridge Collapse

Calgary Alberta - CP's Bonnybrook bridge, built in 1912, partially collapsed around 3:30 a.m., 27 Jun 2013, as a 102-car train rolled across it.

While no TSB report has yet been issued it appears that the high volume of flood water at that time scoured away a bridge footing causing the concrete support pier to partially sink with the steel structure following.

Tank cars stranded on the collapsed bridge were removed by 28 Jun 2013 and did not leak crude oil into the river.

Work on the collapsed span over the Bow River in Calgary continues.

In the photos you can see portions of the right hand span have been cut away.

Temporary steel beams have been laid across the collapsed right hand span with wires connected to the damaged bridge portion below.

Two cranes are positioned on the bridge in preparation of a lift.
