Binghamton New York USA - Authorities say a Canadian Pacific Railway employee from Pennsylvania has been killed while inspecting a railway bridge over an upstate New York road.

State police say 39-year-old Thomas Tarchak of Simpson, Pennsylvania, was conducting elevated train bridge measurements Monday when he came into contact with a power line and was electrocuted.

Troopers say he was in a bucket truck under elevated tracks over Route 235, about 25 kilometres east of Binghamton.

He was working with three other railway employees at the time.

A spokesman for the company says the incident is being investigated.

New York state Department of Labor officials say the investigation will be handled by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration office in Syracuse, New York, USA.
