ATV Rider Crashes
in Welland Train Tunnel

Welland Ontario - One male has been taken to hospital following a serious ATV crash in the Welland railway tunnel under the Welland Canal Sunday.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene adjacent to Townline Tunnel Road at 2:40 p.m.

Welland Fire and Emergency Services Platoon Chief John Infantino said the crash happened in the tunnel between two sets of railway tracks, which are separated by two concrete barriers.

"He was found by other ATVers," Infantino said.

"The ATV is still there on its side," he said just before 4:30 p.m., adding the Niagara Regional Police collision reconstruction unit was investigating.

CP Rail as a result halted traffic on its lines, he said.

The male was taken by ambulance to Welland hospital then airlifted by an Ornge air ambulance to another hospital.

One firefighter accompanied the patient in the land ambulance.

No other details were immediately available.
