Empty Grain Cars Derail Near Estevan

Estevan Saskatchewan - Emergency crews in Saskatchewan were called to Estevan city limits Saturday night for reports of a train derailment.

Two cars had come off the tracks near Highway 39 West and Breeze Street around 21:40.

Shane Code, Estevan's fire chief, said the two Canadian Pacific Railway employees on board cooperated and handed over the train's manifest.

Officials determined the cars normally carry grain, but had already been emptied and posed no threat to the public.

"It was just machinery that was involved, there was no public property that was damaged, there was no disruption to traffic, and no one was hurt, including, thankfully, the two CP rail employees," Code said.

The site was closed to the public overnight because the structure was considered unsafe, as the cars were tilted at a 30-degree angle.

CP police and RCMP are investigating what caused the derailment.
