City Finds it Tough to Lock Out Love

Saskatoon Saskatchewan - Romance has been resurrected once again on a Saskatoon railway bridge.

In spring, lovers attached padlocks to the Canadian Pacific Railway bridge and stairwell, following a worldwide tradition.

City workers soon cut down the symbols of love, citing public safety risks, future damage, and repairs.

New padlocks are now scattered across the infrastructure.

On Friday, nearly 20 locks dotted the stairwell leading up to the bridge spanning the South Saskatchewan River.

The city remains firm its decision to remove the locks, said Angela Gardiner, the city's director of transportation. "We will continue to remove the locks as they appear," she said, adding it's part of the city's regular maintenance. Authorities and citizens have campaigned to end the cherished tradition because of public safety concerns, vandalism, pollution, and the general deterioration of the locks.

Most efforts haven't worked.
