POSITION DESCRIPTION:
A Rail Traffic Controller/Train Dispatcher is a profession similar to Air Traffic Controllers. The Rail Traffic Controllers control the movement of trains and engineering track crews across CP's rail network through a series of controls similar to traffic lights. These positions offer excellent challenges as you are responsible for planning and scheduling trains through a geographical region in the most efficient and safest manner. The positions are based in Calgary and offer attractive wages and benefits including a defined benefit pension plan. CP is looking for employees that like challenging work and want to become part of history. CP also provides on-site paid training to become a Rail Traffic Controller/Train Dispatcher.
 
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Make business decisions based on priorities established by the Calgary Operations Centre all under CROR (Canadian Rail Operating Rules) and practices;
Provide control functions to ensure the safe movement of trains and other on-track railway equipment;
Minimize train delays through effective planning and scheduling, and managing railway personnel;
Makes business decisions based on priorities established by the Operations Centre;
Coordinates train meets to optimize railway performance;
Enters data into various information and control systems;
Maintains an on-going awareness of the operation of the railway; equipment and signals, car handling, operating manuals, computer applications, and collective agreements;
Assists in solving problems on their assigned territories;
Provides effective communication to the Corridor Teams on the status of the railway;
Manages crews from the home and away from home terminals;
Participates in on the job safety audits that are conducted on a regular and frequent basis to ensure safety rules are understood and implemented according to standard.
 
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Must be bilingual (French and English) both written and verbal;
High School Graduation or General Equivalency Diploma is required;
Previous experience in Air or Rail Traffic Control/train dispatch would be an asset;
Proficient in the use of computers;
Ability to pass a Medical examination including Physical, Vision Screening, Hearing Screening and Drug/Alcohol Screening;
Ability to pass Security Clearance;
Must successfully complete company training program;
Must become qualified in the Canadian Rail Operating Rules and other regulations;
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively;
Demonstrated effective decision making, planning and scheduling skills;
Demonstrated ability to work under pressure;
Must be able to work shift work.

Training is provided by CP and you must become qualified in the Canadian Operating Rules and other regulation.

This position is staffed 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, therefore shift work and weekend work is required.
