CP Looks Into Minor Derailment
Near Ignace

Ignace Ontario - Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) is looking into a small derailment near Ignace.

Late Sunday evening, a car was carrying crushed rock between Dryden and Ignace along the CP line, when it left the tracks.

The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) says an investigation isn't necessary, but they do keep a record of such occurences.

In late April, the same rail line had a washout between Kenora and Vermilion Bay.

A database set up by the TSB shows 58 reportable incidents within the Ignace subdivision since January of 2004.

They included 30 reports of derailments, 10 accidents involving crossings, and six that involved fires.

Within the same time period, there were 83 reportable incidents within the Keewatin CN subdivision, as well as more than 160 from the Redditt subdivision.

Staff at the safety board say the incidents can vary in their severity.

For example, a derailment in the Fort Frances subdivision in May of 2014 led to the evacuation of the community, after a rail car containing molten sulphur was punctured.

A report on the incident found tracks were misaligned, leading to the derailment.

Jerry Berriault is the regional senior investigator for the rail and pipeline branch of the TSB.

He noted reports are made after a serious injury or fatality, collisions, a derailment, damage to track, fire, or explosions.

These incidents are classed from class 1, which requires a public inquiry, to a class 5 where data is simply kept for the monitoring of trends or patterns.

Berriault said the trends for both rail lines, CP or CN, were going down.

"Both railways in those particular corridors have been trending downwards, in terms of their train derailments, and that's a good thing," he said.
