City Considers Buying
Part of Old Rail Line

Peterborough Ontario - Another section of recreational trail could be added to the city soon if the council buys an unused railway corridor.

On Monday, city councillors will consider buying the abandoned Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) line extending from Monaghan Road to Lake Street.

The corridor would continue the existing Crawford Rail Trail, running northeast from Monaghan south of Lansdowne and dipping behind the KFC/Taco Bell before crossing Lansdowne and continuing behind the Home Depot to connect with Lake Street at Park Sreet.

The cost of buying the rail corridor would be $284,000.

The plan would be to convert it into a new segment of recreational trail.

The city has been adding to its cross-town trail for a few years now, with the idea of making the Trans-Canada Trail traverse Peterborough.

A year ago, the city opened a new segment of trail along the old railway corridor south of Lansdowne Street East.

It goes beyond Technology Drive to the city limits.

The city bought that segment of rail corridor from CP in 2014 for $512,000.

Both these spur lines were closed by CP in 2012.

The first line was offered to the city two years ago, and now this second one is for sale.
