Port Moody Station Museum Lights Up

Port Moody British Columbia - With a few trees and railings lit up, the Port Moody Station Museum is already looking brighter, but Saturday evening is when thousands more lights, and a whole lot of Christmas cheer, will be switched on.

Organizer Jeff McLellan initiated a "Go Fund Me" page last week and quickly surpassed his $1,000 fund raising goal.

In fact, nearly $2,000 has been raised and McLellan has set a new target of $3,500.

"We're at a 16,000 bulb count and we will probably be at 6,000 linear feet of lights," McLellan said.

The cherry trees in front of the museum on Murray Street have been wrapped in lights and McLellan expects to have enough to cover the perimeter of the Venosta cover, the railings around the property, the large willow tree near the Moody Street overpass, and more.

McLellan, who regularly commutes past the area, said he hopes to brighten up the particularly dark pocket of Murray Street in time for the holidays and is hoping businesses in the area will also catch on to add to the display.

The lights will be switched on at 17:00 on Saturday, 10 Dec 2016.

The "Venosta". Constructed in 1921 as one of 13 ten compartment Glen series cars. It entered service as Glen "Atha" and operated as built until May 1942 when it was completely refitted to increase its sleeping capacity. In its rebuilt form, it had eight sections and four double bedrooms. Eight of the 10 compartment cars built in 1921 were reconstructed and joined six cars which were built new as eight section/four double bedroom sleepers in 1931. Glen "Atha" was renamed "Venosta" when rebuilt. In 1953, several V class sleepers were modernized internally. The wooden surfaces were painted over and some surfaces were covered with arborite and chromium plated metal - Date unknown Anonymous Photographer.
