Canadian Crude by Rail Activity Continues Climb Into December

Canada - Canadian crude by rail exports increased by almost 65 percent between July and December 2017, according to the latest data from the National Energy Board.

Rail operators transported 152,151 bbls/d in November, on a steady increase trend since July, when shippers moved 92,551 bbls/d.

Most recently Canadian crude by rail spiked in March 2017 at 155,655 bbls/d, its highest since October 2015, when operators transported 166,807 bbls/d.

The overall high in Canadian crude by rail shipping occurred in September 2014 at nearly 180,000 bbls/d, which is expected to be cracked this year as trains pick up the slack left behind by pipelines filled to the brim.

"If we assume no other pipeline projects are sanctioned, we expect the undersupply of crude oil pipeline capacity to be approximately 250,000 bbl/d in 2018 and 2019, falling to 31,000 bbl/d in 2020," GMP FirstEnergy said in a research note in January.

"We would expect crude by rail volumes in 2018 to surpass what was experienced in 2016."
