Township Teasers Visit Wellesley
and Woolwich

Location - Last week's Flash from the Past presented readers with a Township Teaser, connect four century-old photographs with the Region of Waterloo's four remaining townships.

Wellesley Township's most northwesterly community is the site of the railway photographs.

The three Linwood ladies who hopped onto the baggage cart around 1910 were likely awaiting one of the Canadian Pacific Railway's (CPR) regular daily passenger trains.

The CPR had constructed the Guelph to Goderich line in the 1903-1906 period and the first passenger train arrived in Linwood on 16 Nov 1906.

For the next six decades Linwood was closely connected to larger communities across the province.

Service ended in 1965.

The Hockey Special at the Linwood station - 21 Mar 1941 Photographer unknown.

In today's second Linwood photo, it is 14:30 on 21 Mar 1941.

Engine 2222 has steam up and passengers, having paid their $1.85 fare, are welcoming the "Hockey Special".

Between Goderich and Toronto, hockey fans from small town Ontario jumped on board for a quick ride to Union Station then headed to Maple Leaf Gardens.

Their beloved Leafs were on the way to the 1942 Stanley Cup but that evening could only tie the New York Rangers 1-1.

Following the game, a special late train delivered fans back to their communities in the early hours, in Linwood the back-home time was 03:00.

The CPR line was torn up in the 1980s and is now a hiking trail following the old route across Ontario.

My appreciation to Julie and Don Schnurr of Linwood for providing the photos.

Rych Mills.
