Freight Train Derails at Calgary Yard

Calgary Alberta - Two Calgary roads were shut down for a few hours on Sunday afternoon after a freight train derailed at the Alyth rail yard.

Police said the train derailed at approximately 12:30 leading to the closure of 19th Avenue and 15th Street S.E. and 17th Avenue between 17th Street and 17a Street S.E.

A dozen cars from the Canadian Pacific (CP) train left the tracks, CP spokesperson Mallory McCredie said.

CP implemented emergency response protocols and sent teams to the site immediately.

The roads were reopened to traffic shortly after 15:00.

Calgary police said they determined no hazardous materials spilled and there were no leaks as a result of the derailment.

McCredie said no one was injured and there was no threat to the public.

"We take this incident extremely seriously, and will be focused on safety as we continue to deal with this incident," she said in an emailed statement.

CP is investigating.
