May be Affected by CP Strike

Montreal Quebec - The union representing about 3,000 conductors and locomotive engineers at Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. (CP) says it has formally served the company with a 72 hour notice of an intent to strike.

The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) cites a lack of progress at the bargaining table but says talks are set to resume on Wednesday.

This could pose a problem for commuters who use the Reseau de Transport Metropolitain (RTM).

The Vaudreuil-Hudson, Saint-Jerome, and Candiac lines all run on CP tracks.

The RTM is concerned about the outcome of the negotiations and promised to keep its customers informed of any disruptions.

The union says should the two sides fail to reach a negotiated settlement, the workers will walk out at 00:01 on Saturday, 21 Apr 2018.

CP workers voted 94.2 percent on 6 Apr 2018 in favour of strike action to support their contract demands.

The union says the railway is seeking cuts and concessions and an end to workers being pushed to "well beyond their point of exhaustion."

The previous contract expired at the end of 2017 and federal mediators were brought in on 29 Jan 2018.

OKthePK Joint Bar Editor:  The TCRC union states:  Commuter train services in Montreal (RTM), Toronto (GO and UPX), and Vancouver (WCE) are operated by Bombardier Transportation, not Canadian Pacific.

Teamster members who operate trains in those locations are Bombardier employees and would not go on strike.
