Camrose Alberta - A 71-year-old man is dead after the mobility device he was driving was struck by a train in Camrose Sunday night.

The senior was struck by an eastbound Canadian Pacific train at a crossing in the city, the Camrose Police Service said in a statement posted to its website.

Officers responded to the scene around 20:45 after getting several 911 calls about the fatal collision.

Fire, paramedics, and CP police also responded to the crash.

Camrose police said witnesses reported the signal crossing lights were flashing, the warning bell was ringing, and the train sounded its horn, but was unable to avoid striking the man.

The name of the deceased is not being released by police.

The Camrose police statement describes the death of a "senior member of our community" as tragic.

The detachment will hold a community briefing about the incident Wednesday night at Sparling School.

Police officers, the police chaplain, and victim services will be on hand to meet with affected citizens.
