Town Council Agrees to Pay CP for Centre Street Crossing Reconstruction

Vulcan Alberta - The amount of money Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) invoiced to the Town for the reconstruction of the Centre Street crossing came as a bit of a shock to council last week.

CP sent an invoice to the Town for $140,283.70 including GST, for the 21 Jun 2018 project.

(The Town can recover all of the $6,680.18 in GST.)

The Town did not plan for or coordinate the project, so it wasn't included in the 2018 budget, wrote Kim Fath, the Town's chief administrative officer, in a report.

But the Town is responsible for all repair costs of the Centre Street crossing, said Fath at the 10 Sep 2018 council meeting.

"It is kind of a shocker, but you're right, you know, it is our responsibility," said Mayor Tom Grant.

Council agreed to take $133,603.52, the cost not including GST, from its contingency reserve to pay the invoice, for the reconstruction of 22.3 metres of crossing.

The contingency reserve had a balance of $195,000 before the Town agreed to pay CP.
