Near Miss

Smith Falls Ontario - Canadian Pacific units 4222 and 4213 were making up their train of empty flatcars at Smiths Falls to go to the army base at Petawawa Ontario.

They should have gotten a clearance from the CP Chalk River train dispatcher in Sudbury to use the Chalk River subdivision, but instead used the dark CN Smiths Falls Subdivision illegally in making up their train.

VIA train number 43 came around a curve a mile east of Smiths Falls at 93 mph and saw the CP units in the distance.

The VIA train was put into emergency, then the engineer jumps off, loses his footing, ending up face first on the ballast.

The CP crew went out of service when they got their train stopped in the yard at Smiths Falls.

OKthePK Joint Bar Editor:  I suspect the CP crew will be unemployed shortly.
